It's all about experimenting, learning, and getting results for Wim. Designing, building, and working in his garden is what he likes to do in his spare time. And he's apt in drawing. Occasionally he reads a thriller (to relax 😊), and mostly his four children keep him busy.
Although Wim doesn't do hero-worshipping, Da Vinci comes closest to a ' hero' as the engineer's prototype, achieving much with limited resources.
'Yes, you can!' If you use all the competence you have, you can do a lot more than you think. You shouldn't wonder if you can; you should just go for it.
Young Wim, he'd advise believing more in himself. Lacking self-confidence is one of the biggest obstacles in one's career. It's a pity to regret NOT having achieved something.
Mentoring is not new to Wim. He knows both sides of the equation well. Several people have been his mentor for many years, albeit in an informal way. And turning the table, Wim can create an open, honest relationship of trust with his mentees. Having made many mistakes, gifted with empathy and an original take on things, non-conformist Wim adds even more color to the already vivid tableau of mentors.
