In challenging his last frontiers, Maarten goes to the bitter end in cycling and triathlons. Mental peace he obtains through long, slow walks and a visit to the spa. Intellectual challenges he finds in reading about philosophy, psychology, economics, and his favorite theme, history. Stretching the mind is a boundary he regularly seeks to push. Thus, combining intellectual and physical challenges, Maarten finds a necessary balance between intensity and peace of mind.
Heroism is fundamentally changing things by going against the time frame, which takes a hell of a lot of courage and perseverance, i.e. the Greek philosophers with their paradigm shift about democracy, Caesar with his quest for a new Roman state, artists and musicians who change the world with colors and notes. In the end, heroes succeed to challenge the status quo and change the world by contributing to the enhancement of the world, and inspiring people to discover the hero in themselves.
Living up to the ideal of the 'homo universalis', Maarten's goal in life is to employ all potential and help others with this quest to be the very best they can be. Mindful of his adage, 'Choose life,' Maarten squeezes out every puissance to the last drop like a lemon. Living an ample life gives him peace.
To young Maarten, he'd say: "Use small successes to create your way to the big one. Don't leap too far too soon." Being overly ambitious at a young age has taught Maarten essential life lessons. Having had competent mentors by his side too.
Leading by example, profoundly empathic, and an expert facilitator, Maarten is ready to be your travel companion.
